Parenthood is bliss and parenting is a rewarding experience. But the role you must take, and the responsibilities you must fulfill can sometimes seem overwhelming. Especially in today’s postmodern, achievement oriented, small sized families, children (mainly single or two) are over pampered. Parents, while showering their love forget to tell them a firm “No”. This is the root cause of all the problems. Some of the common parenting mistakes are:
- Not attempting to resolve issues at all…
Problems faced by parents are common, solutions and techniques may be different. So rather than ignoring or denying the problems, facing them, figuring your way through different means to resolve them is important. But making no efforts at all is not ok.
- Expecting unrealistic achievement…
Make sure your expectations align with what your children are developmentally capable of, as every child has their own pace of development. Never set unrealistic goals or compare your child with others, as these push them into underestimating themselves and overshadowing their life in the long run.
- Over-monitoring your children…
If children are constantly being told what to do, how to behave, and when to perform tasks, they feel restricted. Over scrutinized children start to believe that they are not good and can lose their confidence and an extreme case, can turn hostile.
- Being in consistence
Inconsistent parenting style where sometimes you are very strict, but other times you don't seem to care what your kids are doing, will make it hard for your children to know what is expected of them and how should they behave. Inconsistent behaviour pattern hampers children. Whereas, consistency is the key to help them have a balanced life.
- Fighting your children's battles…
Most parents want their children to grow up to become independent, self-sufficient adults, but this will only happen if parents give their children the room to face the consequences of their choices and actions. So let them fight their own battles. Being a parent we can support them from outside and stay passive making them more confident in life.

It’s natural to want the best for your kids, and you may do things that seem like a good idea at the time but have unintended consequences later on.
