Gurukul Global School, Manimajra, Chandigarh organised a workshop for their faculty yesterday. Col. Gursewak Singh (retd.), a city based marriage counsellor and the source person for this workshop, covered the wide range of topics including stress management, art of happiness and marital relationships.
Talking about stress in educational institutions, Col. Guru, as he known as, said that prime cause of stress among school students is unreasonably high expectations in examination results both from parents and teachers, and the intense competition that they face in their academic as well as social lives. Unless our educational system is restructured, this malaise may not go.
The workshop focused on different types of stress, their sources and adverse effects on the mind and body, psychological tips to deal with stressful situations in everyday life, and specialised mind- body technique of de- stressing, called Cosmic Meditation was practiced by all present.
He said that stress and happiness are state of mind and they do not go hand in hand. He gave tips to be happy so that stress level remains under control.
“A major source of our stress comes from bad relationship, be it marital or others. It is also true that no one has perfect relationships in marriage. We are all borne with unique and distinct personalities with different likes and dislikes. The causes of marital discord could be anything like infidelity, misunderstanding, incompatibility, financial issues (read dowry) or at times just plain boredom. The differences are bound to be there and they should be resolved amicably to lead a happy married life, and there is nothing like having a happy married life in this world” said the Colonel.
An interesting part of the workshop was completing ‘Marriage Compatibility Quiz’ by the married persons. This quiz from Col. Guru’s new book on Stress management, helps couples to assess their marriage compatibility and carry out self corrections.
School Principal, Mrs. Aruna Bhardwaj, gave useful motivational tips and said such workshops are very useful for the faculty members.
